How to recognise a cockroach? German cockroaches and cockroaches
Cockroaches and German cockroaches are not only an aesthetic problem, but also a health problem. Many of us wonder about the differences between these insects, especially when they appear as uninvited guests in the house. In this article, we explain how these insects differ, how to recognise them in practice and what to do to get rid of them effectively.
What does a cockroach look like?
Cockroaches have a characteristic appearance that makes them easy to recognise. They are usually larger than German cockroaches – adult individuals can reach a length of 2.5 to 4 cm. Their body is oval and flattened, which allows them to easily slip into narrow crevices. They are most often dark brown or black in colour, and their carapace often has a shiny appearance. They have clearly visible wings, which, however, are not always used for flying, depending on the species. The long, thin antennae are very mobile and help them to orientate themselves in the dark. Cockroaches also have six long, spiny legs, which enable them to move very quickly.
Recognising cockroaches and waterbugs – differences
Although both belong to the same insect family, there are several key features that help to distinguish them:
Body size and shape:
- Cockroaches: Larger (up to 4 cm), more oval and shiny.
- Silverfish: Smaller (up to 1.5 cm), more flattened and slender.
Colour:
- Cockroaches: Usually dark brown or black, with a shiny carapace.
- Silverfish: Lighter, usually yellow-brown with darker stripes around the head.
Wings:
- Cockroaches: Wings visible, but not always used for flying.
- Silverfish: Wings also visible, but males can fly or glide for a short time.
Environmental preferences:
- Cockroaches: prefer warmer and more humid places, e.g. kitchens, bathrooms.
- Silverfish: more common in colder places, e.g. in cellars or under cupboards.
Activity and behaviour:
- Cockroaches: more timid, quickly escape into dark corners.
- German cockroaches: more active at night, often appear near food sources.
Control:
- Different living environments require slightly different control methods. Cockroaches are better eliminated in damp and warm places, while German cockroaches are better eliminated in colder spaces.
Knowledge of these characteristics not only allows for more effective identification, but also for the use of appropriate methods of elimination, which can significantly increase the effectiveness of prevention measures.
Ideal living conditions for cockroaches and silverfish
Although often confused with each other, cockroaches and silverfish have different preferences regarding ideal living conditions. Cockroaches like to live in warm and humid environments, which is why they often inhabit kitchens and bathrooms. They prefer dark places where food is easily accessible and the humidity exceeds normal household standards. In their natural habitat, cockroaches are often found near water sources such as swimming pools or water pipes, which shows their preference for moisture and warmth. They are most active at night, when they go out to feed, looking for leftover food left by the residents.
German cockroaches, on the other hand, thrive in cooler places, which results in their frequent presence in basements, warehouses and other cool and shady environments. They prefer dry areas, but do not shy away from easy access to food. They like spaces where they can move freely and avoid natural predators. Like cockroaches, woodlice are most active at night, but their smaller size allows them to hide more easily in hard-to-reach places.
Effective methods of controlling insects in the home
Effective cockroach and silverfish control at home requires professional products and techniques tailored to the characteristics of these insects. Commercially available insecticides offer a variety of solutions, including aerosols, traps and gels, which effectively eliminate both adults and their eggs. The choice of the right product depends on the specific location of the infestation and the environmental preferences of the insects. In kitchens and bathrooms, where cockroaches find favourable conditions, sticky traps and gels applied in hard-to-reach places work best.
In contrast, waterbugs, which often live in cooler places, may require a different approach. The most effective way to eliminate them is to use pheromone traps and powders, which act as protective barriers in places where they are active. The key element of an effective strategy is to regularly use insecticides and to keep the area clean and minimise the access of insects to food and water sources.
Preventing cockroaches and silverfish. Cleanliness and hygiene
Preventing cockroaches and silverfish is largely based on cleanliness and hygiene in our homes. The key to success is regular cleaning and eliminating places that may provide an attractive environment for these insects. Particular attention should be paid to kitchens and bathrooms, which are particularly susceptible to cockroaches due to the warmth and humidity. Keeping clean includes systematically cleaning work surfaces, thoroughly removing food residues and regularly emptying waste bins. It is particularly important to store food in sealed containers to prevent insects from accessing the food.
In addition, hygiene includes maintaining a dry environment, which deters both cockroaches and silverfish. Regularly checking and removing any water leaks from sinks or the bathroom will help prevent insects from multiplying. It is also important to seal any cracks and crevices through which insects can sneak into your home.
