Means used for the fumigation of grain and their effects
In silos and warehouses, we use phosphine, which is poisonous for both insects (weevils, flour beetles, granary weevils, etc.) and rodents. Our company uses plant protection products for grain fumigation that generate phosphine, such as QuickPhos Pellets 56 GE and QuickPhos Tablets 56 GE.
QuickPhos contains 56% aluminium phosphide, which reacts with moisture in the air to produce phosphine gas (PH3), which is highly toxic.
One 0.6g tablet of the product we use produces 0.2g of phosphine. It is believed to slow down the uptake and transport of electrons from oxygen to the body’s structures.
It is important that there is a sufficient concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere, which has a direct impact on the toxicity of phosphine. Hydrogen phosphide paralyses insects and thus inhibits their breathing processes.
The process of disinfestation
To guarantee safety on the construction site, we carry out the service according to the applicable procedures. The following procedure must be followed:
1. Determination of safety measures, dosage and type of fumigation gas used.
Mark out the fumigation area (silos, warehouses) with warning signs to define the safety zone.
2. Seal the fumigation area (silos, warehouses).
Use plastic sheeting to make sure the silos and warehouses are gas-tight.
3. Application of gas in closed rooms by a person authorised to perform the work.
The fumigation of grain should begin with the correct insertion of packages containing solids that will turn into gas in the appropriate places.
4. Safety, supervision – Panfil DDD
It is necessary to monitor the rooms in which fumigation has been carried out by measuring the gas concentration. A special concentration monitoring device, e.g. a photoionisation detector, should be used to check the gas.
5. Ventilation of rooms (silos, warehouses)
Ventilate the silos and warehouses in which the gassing process was carried out. Monitoring of gas concentration, which should be 0.1 ppm after degassing, which is a safe gas level for humans.
The storage room and silos can be put into use after obtaining the appropriate gas concentration and after the company issues a certificate stating that the storage rooms and silos are free of gas.
Duration of the service: grain fumigation
Grain fumigation is directly dependent on weather conditions. The appropriate temperature for carrying out the grain fumigation procedure is above 10 degrees Celsius, and the higher this value, the shorter the fumigation procedure. The optimal duration of the grain fumigation service is 7 to 14 days.
