Control of the sugar fish
Fishworms (Thysanura pisciogonica) are insects that resemble small fish, covered in scales, hence they were named fishworm. The insects have 3 long appendages on their abdomen and have a wide front part of the body, tapering towards the back. We can distinguish between the sugar fish and the baker’s fish.
Sugar crabs
Sugar fish have a body length of about 10 mm and are shiny silver in colour, hence they are also referred to as silverfish. The insects are covered with brown scales, while the underside of the body and legs are paler. Their feelers point forward and are up to 8mm long. The sugar fish has three pituitaries at the end of the abdomen. The temperature in which they prefer to live ranges from 22oC. The osprey feeds particularly on food scraps, i.e. protein, starch, sugars and even newspaper or toilet paper. The oystercatcher is resistant to lack of food and can survive for up to a year without it.
Bakery fish
Baker fish are slightly different in appearance from sugar fish. They have a body covered with yellowish and black scales and have feelers that are longer than their body. These insects have legs and a longer whole body than the sugar fish. As far as the occurrence of the ribworms is concerned, both the sugar ribworm and the bakery ribworm are found in similar locations, i.e. humid terrain in many countries of the world, except that, as the name suggests, the bakery ribworm prefers bakeries and food warehouses as the temperature there is higher, i.e. 380C. Their body length is up to 8 mm.
Where can we find the riffraff?
We can find silverfish in mills, bakeries, soggy flats, bathrooms, cellars, warehouses and kitchens. Silverfish usually inhabit dark and damp places. Silverfish are also found outdoors, in abandoned bird nests and under the bark of trees. These small insects travel along plumbing pipes into our warm and damp homes. We can spot fishworms in our homes most often at night. When the light is switched on by a human, the insects escape with specific zigzag movements to their hiding places. In their search for a damp surface, fish bugs fall into bathtubs and sinks, which are a trap for them, as they cannot escape from them due to their inability to climb on smooth and vertical places.
Pestilence of fishworms
As far as the harmfulness of these insects is concerned, it is relatively small in the case of individual uninvited guests – fishworms. However, when fishworms appear en masse in our homes, then they can damage wallpaper, books or contaminate foodstuffs.
Sugar crayfish in the home-what can be done to prevent them?
Sugar crayfish like humidity, so to keep them out of your home you need to get rid of moisture. You need to seal pipes, windows, improve ventilation and it is especially important to remove standing water. In order not to find fishworms in our flat and bathroom, you need to ventilate these rooms, and it is especially important to dry foods that are in damp places and store them in airtight containers. It is worth getting moisture absorbers for the kitchen, bathroom and other interiors of our flat. Freezing rooms where there is a fishfly infestation is also effective, as fishworms are sensitive to low temperatures and at 150C the pest dies. Domestic cleaning – vacuuming the kitchen and bathroom is also important. It is important to get rid of any crevices in our home that provide hiding places for fishworms. It is worth lighting our bathrooms and other damp areas of the home. To minimise the movement of fishworms from outside, remember to sweep up leaves around the house regularly.
In case the above-mentioned home remedies do not work and the sugar fishworms are still present in our kitchen, bathroom, it is then necessary to call in a professional extermination company, which will apply effective ways of getting rid of them.
Fishfly control
Andrzej Panfil’s Disinfection, Disinfestation and Deratisation Department uses integrated pest management (IPM) methods, so it is able to get rid of silverfish quickly and effectively.
Ways of controlling silverfish include carrying out chemical disinsection by using food poisons. These should be distributed in areas where the insects live. You can also get rid of silverfish by using effective pyrethroid insecticides, which need to be carefully applied to areas such as floors, walls, cracks and crevices. Pest extermination can be carried out by spraying or ULV fogging, which will distribute the agent to any place. Odourless insecticides are long-lasting in their effect. In order to detect whether there are sugar glue traps, it is advisable to use sticky traps and place them in areas where they may be present, such as the Panko glue trap.
