Cockroach control: roaches, cockroaches

Fighting cockroaches, German cockroaches and American cockroaches

The cockroach is an insect that has adapted to living in an environment heavily transformed by humans. There are many species of cockroach, the most common pests being the German cockroach (Blatella germanica), the Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) and the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana).

Cockroach species

German

German cockroaches have long, mobile antennae, four jointed feet, each of which has a pad, and the last of which has a pad with claws. German cockroaches are about 1 cm long and light brown. They have well-formed wings, but they do not fly. The flat body of these pests allows them to get through the smallest cracks. Male pillbugs usually live for 4 months, while females live longer, i.e. 6 months. Pillbugs are most commonly found in warehouses, kitchens, warm places, hospitals and catering establishments. Pillbugs are nocturnal.

German cockroach

German cockroaches are about 18-30 mm long and therefore larger than German brown cockroaches. These pests are black, dark brown and shiny with a stocky build. Cockroaches are winged insects, but they only fly as a last resort. They hide in their daytime shelters and only come out to find food after sunset. Cockroaches are omnivores and very sensitive to water shortage. Male cockroaches have wings up to 2/3 of the length of their abdomen, while female cockroaches have vestigial wings. Cockroaches produce an unpleasant odour from their skin glands.

American cockroach

American cockroach Periplaneta americana is a cockroach with a reddish-brown shell and a yellow-coloured body. It can be 2.8 to 5 cm long. These pests have well-developed wings and can fly up to 30 metres. Cockroaches of this group are found in warm and humid places such as bakeries, hospitals and kitchens. The pests are nocturnal. American cockroaches live for about 2 years.

Cockroaches such as American cockroaches, common cockroaches and German cockroaches do not bite, but they can multiply very quickly, and thus overwhelm us with their numbers and contaminate our food supplies.

Our company fights cockroaches and silverfish in houses, flats and large facilities, hospitals in Inowrocław, Bydgoszcz, Toruń, Poznań and many other cities.

Cockroaches and silverfish are the most common and well-known household insects. They are sanitary insects that very often appear in kitchens and facilities where food is present, which can result in the suspension of a given centre (i.e. restaurant) by the Sanitary and Epidemiological Station. In such cases, it is necessary to have cockroaches and silverfish exterminated by a professional pest control company.

These pests are carriers of serious infectious diseases such as dysentery, polio, typhoid and viral gastroenteritis.

What can be done to prevent the appearance of cockroaches and waterbugs?

Unfortunately, cockroaches and waterbugs can wander in from the neighbours of our flat or house. Therefore, the only way is to discourage insects from such visits. There are recommended ways to prevent cockroaches and silverfish from appearing in our house or flat. It is important to keep the rooms insect-proof and to install nets in windows or ventilation openings. It is also important to limit the access of cockroaches and waterbugs to water and food. To prevent the appearance of cockroaches in our home, company, etc., we should keep the place tidy, not leave food leftovers, and keep food in closed containers. To minimise the infestation, the room temperature should be kept at a constant level. Production waste should also be removed from the workplace on a regular basis.

Fighting silverfish – home remedies!

Take the fight against cockroaches into your own hands! Try some home remedies to get rid of cockroaches! Observe where the pests are coming from: cockroaches come out, and then you can use insect repellents. Substances that affect insects include sugar mixed with baking powder and crushed bay leaves scattered around the kitchen. Beer is another interesting way to reduce pests when there are only a few of them in your house. Beer lovers become slower after being tempted by the drink, so if they are in a bowl with a cloth soaked in beer, cover them quickly and take them outside.

However, if you still have problems with pillbugs in your home, check out the professional methods of control offered by Andrzej Panfil’s Disinfection, Pest Control and Rodent Control Company!

Control of cockroaches

The control of pillbugs, cockroaches and other insects is effective when using integrated control methods. These include

Monitoring

Pest monitoring is extremely important, especially in the case of insects in industrial plants. The Disinfection, Pest Control and Rat Control Company then carries out a visual inspection on the company’s premises and checks the cockroach monitoring equipment using ‘cockroach and cockroach’ traps. Afterwards, it is important to determine the number of insects and to record the pest activity in the documentation. If the established threshold for cockroaches and woodlice is exceeded, they must be controlled by chemical or mechanical means.

Use of chemical agents

Cockroaches and woodlice are pests that can also be eliminated using chemical agents. These preparations leave microgranules in the environment that attach to the insect. A cockroach or a pill bug covered with the agent transfers the poison to the other individuals, after which the cockroach dies. There are many pest control preparations that need to be selected appropriately to make the cockroaches disappear immediately. An effective method of getting rid of insects is ULV fogging. It involves dispersing a poisonous agent using a fogging device, which breaks the preparation down into small particles, so that hard-to-reach places are also covered with poison.

Mechanical methods

To get rid of cockroaches or woodlice, it is worth using a gel that is spread in cracks and crevices, i.e. in areas where cockroaches or woodlice are present. The use of gel-based insecticides is an effective and long-lasting method. Professional use of these products is important to prevent the pests from spreading further. Applying the gel in our house, flat or company means that we do not smell anything and the product does not spread to other rooms. This method is recommended for use in kindergartens, schools, healthcare facilities and wherever chemicals cannot be used, e.g. in the presence of sick people, elderly people, children, pregnant women or animals. The gel preparation for fighting bedbugs and cockroaches has an insecticidal effect, and after the poison has been absorbed, the pests die within a few hours.
