Fighting ants
Ants belong to the Formicidae family. There are over 12,000 species of ants. These insects live in large colonies, in which each ant has a specific role. The most important one is the winged, fertilised female, the queen, who lays eggs throughout her life. In some ants, the queen lives up to 12 months, while in others she lives 10-15 years, up to 25! The largest group in the colony are the workers, which are sterile, wingless females. Ant workers live on average 4 years (from a few months to 10 years) and their duties change with age. The task of the youngest group is to keep the nest tidy and feed the queen and larvae. Older worker ants, on the other hand, are responsible for obtaining food outside the nest and it is they who are most commonly found in places such as our homes and gardens. In contrast, pharaoh ants are more common in apartment buildings, where there can be 350,000 worker ants and 800 queens in their nests. When the nest is in danger, the ant workers move the larvae and pupae to a safe place. Ants eat both plant and animal food. These insects like food containing sugars and protein. Ants often go where the plants are because they lick the honeydew from them, which is excreted by aphids. In return, the ants take care of the aphids and remove dead individuals from the colonies, thus preventing the plants from being attacked by the aphids. The insects breed the aphids in their anthill and protect them from predatory insects.
Pharaoh ants
Pharaoh ants, also known as the domesticated Monomorium pharaonis, are a species of ant that live in very large colonies, i.e. over 300,000 individuals and 2,000 queens. These insects are found in damp, warm places where there is a large concentration of bacteria. Ants can be found in wall cracks, under the floorboards, under tiles and near water pipes. Ant nests can also be found in furniture joints, behind wardrobes, under flower pots or near bathtubs. You can recognise where ants have been in the garden by the ‘paths’ that the ant colony has made.
Harmful ants
Ants are particularly harmful in hospitals because they spread many diseases caused by bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella and Clostridium spp. Small pharaoh ants are able to squeeze into medical equipment or even into a patient’s plaster cast. Pharaoh ants can bite painfully.
These insects are a big problem for people, they contaminate food and the rooms in their homes.
What can you do to prevent ants from appearing in your house or garden?
An effective preventive method, which is recommended to avoid the need to control ants later on, is to make sure your home is insect-proof. All cracks and crevices in your house should be properly sealed. We can also prevent ants by keeping our homes clean, washing our furniture and floors, and storing food in containers. Ants like water, so we should cut off their access to it and repair any leaky appliances in our homes. To avoid an ant infestation, we should throw away our rubbish regularly.
Fighting ants – home remedies!
Read the following information about methods to fight ants yourself!
Try popular home remedies for ants! You need to observe where the ants are coming from, and then you can use insect repellents. You can use cinnamon powder, which ants don’t like, to fight them! When there are more and more of these insects in your garden, sprinkle cinnamon where the ants are moving. The powder will discourage them from entering your garden shed. Another popular home remedy for getting rid of unwanted insects is to spread cornflour in the garden, which the ants will eat and die. You can also get rid of ants in the garden if you plant a lot of thyme, lavender, mint, parsley and garlic. These plants are useful because their scent repels ants.

Fighting ants with the help of Andrzej Panfil’s Disinfection, Pest Control and Rodent Extermination Company
Professional products and the experience of pest control companies are the only way to effectively fight ants. Our company uses insecticides to get rid of ants in the house and in the garden. The product is applied to the ant nest and the area around it. To control an ant colony through disinsection, the correct dose of the product must be applied to key areas such as doors, windows, floor/wall junctions and other possible ant hiding places in the house or garden. We should also apply liquid ant repellent in cracks, which can also be a good place for ants in the house or garden. We can also use powder and aerosol ant repellents, which are most commonly used to control running ants. We can also fight ants using food-based poison, which brings effective results.
Ant control with the use of professional preparations is a long-term procedure that allows you to effectively get rid of ant colonies for many months. If we also apply the hygienic method, and thus limit the food for the ants, then the applied measures, chemical preparations, and poisons will be more readily consumed by the ants.
