Ozonation
Ozone is a non-flammable gas. Due to its germicidal effect, it is considered the strongest disinfectant. It is an oxygen molecule consisting of three atoms – O3. This gas is used to clean rooms of bacteria, fungi, microbes and eliminate unpleasant odours. Ozone works by oxidising organic and inorganic contaminants. Ozone is a highly reactive gas, which means that the third oxygen atom separates from the rest and combines with other molecules to oxidise bacteria, viruses, moulds and fungi.
Ozone disinfection involves the removal of bacteria, viruses and fungi and their spores when the ozone concentration is 13 µg/dm3. This disinfection method does not require the use of any bactericides and still cleans the air of microorganisms.
This method is used in rooms with an ozone generator.
How long does it take to ozonise a room?
The duration depends on the size of the room. It can take from 30 minutes to several hours.
Is ozonisation safe for our health?
However, it should be emphasised that although ozone is safe, it can be poisonous if its concentration exceeds the standard. Harmful concentrations are those above 0.08 ppm in the air, at which point ozone is dangerous for humans and animals. Therefore, it is important that untrained people do not attempt to ozonise rooms themselves, but instead commission a specialised company to do so. A room that has been ozonised must be properly secured. No people or animals may be present in the flat during the disinfection process. After the ozone treatment, wait a few hours until the ozone concentration has decreased to a safe level and then ventilate the room. Ozone decomposes into normal oxygen, which means it is harmless to us.
Ozone treatment – advantages of using ozone
Ozone treatment improves the air quality in rooms and sterilises them, as well as removing all kinds of odours. Disinfecting rooms with ozone guarantees that house dust mites are completely destroyed, not just masked. Ozone can also be used in hotels and restaurants to remove unpleasant cooking odours and cigarette smoke. It is important for our health to destroy airborne allergens, which ozone disinfection also does. Ozonisation is a process that destroys musty odours in camping cabins. An especially important advantage of using ozone is that it eliminates the smell of a deceased person after the body has decomposed. Ozonisation is also effective in killing the smell of smoke left behind after a fire. It is also worth using ozone in old houses and flats where there is mould or fungus. This often happens when there is a lack of ventilation in our flats. Moulds such as Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus versicolor and their mycotoxins can be removed by using ozone. An important advantage of using ozone is that it can kill bacteria, viruses and fungi even in hard-to-reach places. This is due to the device, which is equipped with fans that distribute the ozone into the smallest crevices. The advantage of the method of ozonation of a room or apartment is that it can be carried out for people with allergies or asthma.
Room ozonation – where can we ozonate and is it worth it?
Ozone treatment can be carried out in public buildings: theatres, cinemas, hospitals. Ozone treatment is also carried out in cars, for example to decontaminate air-conditioning systems. Ozone treatment is often carried out in prisons or ambulances when transporting a neglected or sick patient. In order to kill odours after painting or varnishing, an ozone disinfection service is also carried out in such places. The removal of unpleasant odours by using ozone is carried out in cold stores, freezers and meat processing plants, where unpleasant odours often occur during meat processing. Ozonation prevents food contamination and ensures food safety. Ozone is used to disinfect rooms in healthcare facilities, hospitals, wards, clinics and treatment rooms.
Effective ozonation removes viruses – including the Covid-19 coronavirus!
The strong oxidising properties of ozone eliminate enveloped viruses, including the Covid-19 coronavirus. It is a safe treatment that does not require the use of chemical preparations. Ozone eliminates 99.9% of pathogens in the air, including the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus and influenza.
The sars cov 2 coronavirus is a enveloped virus that is much more sensitive to physicochemical factors than non-enveloped viruses, which means that the coronavirus is very susceptible to ozonation.
